Trailer Fitting Information
How do I check if a trailer will fit my bike?
This guide will help you determine if you can attach your trailer out of the box, or if you will require an additional part.
Step 1: The first step is to identify the type of axle your bike has.
There are 3 main types of axles.
Step 2: The 2nd step is to determine your dropout type.
There are many types of dropouts, but for the purposes of hitching a Trailer, we can group them into 2 main categories:
Step 3: Now that you know what type of axle and dropout you have, use the table below to determine if you will need additional parts to connect your trailer
Most people will have a Standard Dropout paired with a Quick Release, and will therefore not require any extra parts. If you do require an extra part, keep reading.
Axle Type | ||||
Quick Release Axle | Bolt-On Axle | Thru Axle | ||
Dropout Type | Standard Dropout | Steel Hitch (Included) | Steel Hitch (Included) | Steel Hitch (Included) + Burley Thru Axle |
Hooded Dropout | Steel Hitch (Included) + Adapter | Steel Hitch (Included) + Adapter | Steel Hitch (Included) + Burley Thru Axle |
Steel Hitch (included):For example Burley steel hitch- link here
Adapters: For example Burley adapter - link here
Burley Thru Axles: For example Burley thru axles - link here
To summaries, trailers are directly compatible with bikes that have a rear axle of 12mm diameter or less where the steel hitch can sit flush against the bike at the left rear dropout. For bikes with dropouts that are hooded or don't allow the steel hitch to sit flush then you will require an adapter based on the width and thread pitch of the axle.
Will a trailer attach to an e-bike?
Yes e-bikes are ideal for towing a trailer and will make it even easier to ride up hills and longer distances while hauling some extra weight. Whatever you plan to tow with your electric bike, with the right size electric motor, an ebike can give you a boost when you need it or just keep the ride easier while towing a trailer from start to finish. With an electric bike you’ll be able to tow more weight, with less effort.
Same as with a normal bike, you will need to make sure that the bike trailer you’re considering is compatible with your electric bike. The main sources for compatibility issues is with disc brakes, the axle or drive train.
Will a trailer attach to a Brompton?
I am afraid not. Brompton do not recommend due to the imbalance of weight.
